Baruch 3
8 The people continue in their prayer begun for their deliverance. 9 He praises wisdom unto the people, showing that so great adversities came unto them for the despising thereof. 36 Only God was the finder of wisdom. 37 Of the incarnation of Christ.
O Lord almighty, o God of Israel, the soul that is in trouble, and the spirit that is vexed, cries unto thee.
Hear, o Lord, and have mercy: for thou art merciful, and have pity upon us, because we have sinned before thee.
For thou endure forever, and we utterly perish.
O Lord almighty, the God of Israel, hear now the prayer of the dead Israelites, and of their children, which have sinned before thee, and not hearkened unto the voice of thee their God, wherefore thee plagues hang upon us.
Remember not the wickedness of our fathers, but think upon thy power, and thy Name at this time.
For thou art the Lord our God, and thee, o Lord, will we praise.
And for this cause hast thou put thy fear in our hearts, that we should call upon thy Name, and praise thee in our captivity: for we have considered in our minds all the wickedness of our fathers, that sinned before thee.
Behold, we are yet this day in our captivity, where thou hast scattered us, to be a reproach, and a curse, and subject to payments, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, which are departed from the Lord our God.
O Israel, hear the commandments of life: hearken unto them, that thou may learn wisdom.
What is the cause, o Israel, that thou art in thine enemies land, and art waxen old in a strange country?
And art defiled with the dead? and art counted with them, that go down to the graves?
Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom.
For if thou had walked in the way of God, thou should have remained safe forever.
Learn where is wisdom, where is strength, where is understanding, that thou may know also from whence comes long continuance, and life, and where the light of the eyes, and peace is.
Who hath found out her place? or who hath come into her treasures?
Where are the princes of the heathen, and such as ruled the beasts of the earth?
They that had their past time with the souls of the heaven, that hoarded up silver, and gold, wherein men trust, and made none end of their gathering?
For they that coined silver, and were so careful of their work, and whose invention had none end,
Are come to naught, and gone down to hell, and other men are come up in their steads.
When they were young, they saw the light, and dwelt upon earth: but they understood not the way of knowledge,
Neither perceived the paths thereof, neither have their children received it: but they were far off from that way.
It has not been heard of in the land of Chanaan, neither hath it been seen in Theman,
Nor the Agarines that sought after wisdom upon the earth, nor the merchants of Nerran, and of Theman, nor the expounders of fables, nor the searchers out of wisdom have known the way of wisdom, neither do they think upon the paths thereof.
O Israel, how great is the House of God! and how large in the place of his possession!
It is great, and hath none end: it is high, and unmeasurable.
There were the giants, famous from the beginning, that were of so great stature, and so expert in war.
Those did not the Lord chose, neither gave he the way of knowledge unto them.
But they were destroyed, because they had no wisdom, and perished through their own foolishness.
Who hath gone up into heaven, to take her, and brought her down from the clouds?
Who hath gone over the sea, to find her, and hath brought her, rather than fine gold?
No man knows her ways, neither considers her paths.
But he that knows all things, knows her, and he hath found her out with his understanding: this same is he which hath prepared the earth forevermore, and hath filled it with four footed beasts.
When he send out the light, it goes: and when he called it again, it obeys him with fear.
And the stars shine in their watch, and rejoice. When he calls them, they say, Here we be: and so with cheerfulness they show light unto him that made them.
This is our God, and there shall none other be compared unto him.
He hath found out all the way of knowledge, and hath given it unto Iacob his servant, and to Israel his beloved.
Afterward he was seen upon earth, and dwelt among men.
Baruch 4
The reward of them that keep the Law, and the punishment of them that despise it. 12 A comforting of the people being in captivity. 13 A complaint of Jerusalem and under the figure thereof the Church. 25 A consolation and comforting of the same.
THIS is the book of the commandments of God, and the Law that endures forever: all they that keep it, shall come to life: but such as forsake it, shall die.
Turn thee, o Iacob, and take hold of it: walk by this brightness before the light thereof.
Give not thine honor to another, nor the things that are profitable unto thee, to a strange nation.
O Israel, we are blessed: for the things that are acceptable unto God, are declared unto us.
Be of good comfort, o my people, which are acceptable unto God, are declared unto us.
Be of good comfort, my people, which art the memorial of Israel.
Ye are sold to the nations, not for your destruction: but because ye provoked God to wrath, ye were delivered unto the enemies.
For ye have displeased him that created you, even the everlasting God, and ye have grieved Jerusalem, that nourishes you.
When she saw the wrath coming upon you from God, she said, Hearken, ye that dwell about Sion: for God hath brought me into great heaviness.
I see the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting will bring upon them.
With joy did I nourish them, but I must leave them with weeping and mourning.
Let no man rejoice over me a widow, and forsaken of many, which for the sons of my children am desolate, because they departed from the Law of God.
They would not know his righteousness, nor walk in the ways of his commandments: neither did they enter into the paths of discipline, through his righteousness.
Come, ye that dwell about Sion, and call to remembrance the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting has brought upon them.
For he hath brought upon them a nation fro far, an impudent nation, and of a strange language,
Which neither reverence the aged, nor pity the young: these have carried away the dear beloved of the widows, leaving me alone, and destitute of my daughters.
But what can I help you?
Surely he that hath brought these plagues upon you, can deliver you from the hands of your enemies.
Go your way, o children, go your way: for I am left desolate.
I have put off the clothing of peace, and put upon me the sackcloth of prayer, and so long as I live, I will call upon the Everlasting.
Be of good comfort, o children: cry unto God, and he will deliver you from the power, and the hand of the enemies.
For I have hope of your salvation through the Everlasting, and joy is come upon me from the Holy one, because of the mercy, which shall quickly come unto yu from our everlasting Savior.
For I sent you away with weeping, and mourning: but with joy and perpetual gladness will God bring you again unto me.
Like as now the neighbors of Sion saw your captivity, so shall they also see shortly your salvation from God, which shall come unto you with great glory, and brightness from the Everlasting.
My children, suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you from God: for thine enemy hath persecuted thee, but shortly thou shalt see his destruction, and shalt tread upon his neck.
My darlings have gone by rough ways, and were led away as a flock that is scattered by the enemies.
Be of good comfort, my children, and cry unto God: for he that led you away, hath you in remembrance.
And as it came into your mind to go astray from your God: for he that led you away, hath you in remembrance.
For he that hath brought these plagues upon you, will bring you everlasting joy again, with your salvation.
Take a good heart, o Jerusalem: for he which gave thee that name, will comfort thee.
They are miserable that afflict thee, and such as rejoice at thy fall.
The cities are miserable whom thy children serve: miserable is she that hath taken thy sons.
For as she rejoiced at thy decay, and was glad of thy fall, so shall she be sorry for her own desolation.
For I will take away the rejoicing of her great multitude, and her joy shall be turned into mourning.
For a fire shall come upon her from the Everlasting, long to endure, and she shall be inhabited of devils for a great season.
O Jerusalem, look toward the East, and behold the joy that comes unto thee from thy God.
Lo, thy sins (whom thou hast let go) come gathered together from the East unto the West, rejoicing in the word of the Holy one unto the honor of God.
