ECCLESIASTICUS 43 & 44

Ecclesiasticus 43

the sum of the creation of the works of God.

THIS high ornament the clear firmament, the beauty of the heaven so glorious to behold,

The sun also, a marvelous instrument when it appears, declares, at his going out, the work of the most High.

At noon it burns the country, and who may abide for the heat thereof?

The sun burns the mountains three times more than he that keeps a furnace with continual heat: it casts out the fiery vapors, and with the shining beams blinds the eyes.

Great is the Lord that made it, and by his commandment he causes it to run hastily.

The moon also hath he made to appear according to her season, that it should be a declaration of the time, and a sign for the world.

The feasts are appointed by the moon: the light thereof diminishes unto the end.

The month is called after the name thereof, and grows wondrously in her changing.

It is a camp pitched on high, shining in the firmament of heaven: the beauty of heaven are the glorious stars, and the ornament that shines in the high places of the Lord.

By the commandment of the holy one they continue in their order, and fail not in the watch.

Look upon the rainbow, and praise him that made it: very beautiful is it in the brightness thereof.

It compasses the heaven about with a glorious circle, and the hands of the most High have bended it.

Through his commandment he makes the snow to haste, and sends swiftly the lightning of his judgment.

Therefore he opens his treasures, and the clouds fly forth as the fowls.

In his power hath he strengthened the clouds, and broken the hail stones.

The mountains leap at the sight of him: the South wind blows according to his will.

The sound of his thunder beats the earth: so does the storm of the North: the whirlwind also, as birds that fly, scatters the snow, and the falling down thereof is as the grasshoppers and light down.

The eye marvels at the beauty of the whiteness thereof, and the heart is astonished at the rain of it.

He also pours out the frost upon the earth like salt, and when it is frozen, it sticks to the top of pales.

When the cold North wind blows, and ice is frozen of the water, it abides upon all the gatherings together of water, and cloths the waters as with a breastplate.

It devours the mountains, and burns the wilderness, and destroys that that is green, like fire.

The remedy o fall these is when a cloud comes hastily, and when a dew comes upon the heat, it refreshes it.

[By his word he stills the wind:] by his counsel he appeases the deep, and plants the lands therein.

They that sail over the sea, tell of the perils thereof, and when we hear it with our ears, we marvel thereat.

For there be strange, and wondrous works, divers manner of beasts, and the creation of whales.

Through him are all things directed to a good end, and are established by his word.

And when we have spoken much, we can not attain unto them: but this is the sum of all, that he is all.

What power have we to praise him: for he is above all his works?

The Lord is terrible, and very great, and marvelous in his power.

Praise the Lord, and magnify him as much as ye can, yet does he far exceed: exalt him with all your power, and be not weary, yet can ye not attain unto it.

Who hath seen him, that he might tell us? and who can magnify him as he is?

For there are hid yet greater things then these be, and we have seen but a few of his works.

For the Lord hath made all things, and given wisdom to such as fear God.

Ecclesiasticus 44

The praise of certain holy men, Enoch, Noe, Abraham, Isaac and Iacob.

LET us now commend the famous men, and our fathers, of whom we are begotten.

The Lord hath gotten great glory by them, and that through his great power from the beginning.

They have born rule in their kingdoms, and were renowned for their power, and were wise in counsel, and declared prophecies.

They governed the people by counsel and by the knowledge of learning meet for the people, in whose doctrine were wise sentences.

They invented the melody of music, and expounded the verses that were written.

They were rich and mighty in power, and lived quietly at home.

All these were honorable men in their generation, and were well reported of in their times.

There are of them that have left a name behind them, so that their praise shall be spoken of.

There are some also which have no memorial, and are perished, as though they had never been, and are become as though they had never been born, and their children after them.

But for the former were merciful men, whose righteousness hath not been forgotten.

For whose prosperity a good inheritance is reserved, and their seed is contained in the covenant.

Their stock is contained in the covenant, and their posterity after them.

Their seed shall remain forever, and their praise shall never be taken away.

Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name liveth forevermore.

The people speak of their wisdom, and the congregation talk of their praise.

Enoch pleased the Lord God: therefore was he translated for an example of repentance to the generations.

Noe was found perfect, and in the time of wrath he had a reward: therefore was he left as a remnant unto the earth, when the flood came.

An everlasting covenant was made with him, that all flesh should perish no more by the flood.

Abraham was a great father of many people: in glory was there none like unto him.

He kept the Law of the most High, and was in covenant with him, and he set the covenant in his flesh, and in temptation he was found faithful.

Therefore he assured him by an oath, and he would bless the nations in his seed, and that he would multiply him as the dust of the earth, and exalt his seed as the stars, and cause them to inherit from sea to sea, and from the River unto the end of the world.

With Isaac did he continue likewise for Abraham his father’s sake, the blessing of all men, and the covenant,

And caused it to rest upon the head of Iacob, and made himself known by his blessings, and gave him an heritage and divided his portions, and patted them among the twelve tribes.

And he brought out of him a merciful man, which found favor in the sight of all flesh.
