Ecclesiasticus 33
The deliverance of him that fears God. 4 The answer of the wise. 13 Man is in the hand of God, as the clay is in the hand of the potter. 25 Of evil servants.
THERE shall no evil come unto him that fears the Lord: but when he is in temptation, he will deliver him again.
A wise hates not the Law: but he that is an hypocrite therein, is as a ship in a storm.
A man of understanding walks faithfully in the Law, and the Law in faithful unto him.
As the question is made, prepare the answer, and so shalt thou be heard: be sure of the matter, and so answer.
The heart of the foolish is like a cartwheel: and his thoughts are like a scornful friend.
Why does one day excel another, seeing that the light of the days of the year come of the sun
The knowledge of the Lord hath parted them asunder, and he hath by them disposed [inclined, in the mood, having in mind to do something]* of the times and solemn fears.
Some of them hath he chosen and sanctified, and some of them hath he put among the days to number.
And all men are of the ground, and Adam was created out of the earth: but the Lord hath divided them by great knowledge, and made their ways diverse.
Some of them hath he blessed and exalted, and some of them hath he sanctified, and appropriate to himself: but some of them hath he cursed, and brought them low, and put them out of their estate.
As the clay is in the potter’s hand, to order it at his pleasure, so are men also in the hand of their creator, so that he may reward them as likes him best.
Against evil is good, and against death is life: so is the godly against the sinner, and the ungodly against the faithful.
So in all the works of the most High thou may see that there are ever two, one against another.
I woke up last of all, as one that gathers after them in the vintage. In the blessing of the Lord I am increased, and have filled my wine press, like a grape gatherer.
Behold, how I have not labored only for myself, but for all them that seek knowledge.
Hear me, o ye great men of the people, and hearken with your ears, ye rulers of the congregation.
Give not thy son and wife, thy brother and friend, power over thee while thou live, and give not away thy substance to another, lest it repent thee, and thou entreat for the same again.
As long as thou live, and have breath, give not thyself over to any person.
For better it is that thy children should pray unto thee, than that thou should look up to the hands of thy children.
In all thy works be excellent, that thine honor be never stained.
At the time when thou shalt end thy days, and finish thy life, distribute thine inheritance.
The fodder, the whip and the burden belong unto the ass: and meat, correction and work unto thy servant.
If thou set thy servant to labor, thou shalt find rest: but if thou let him go idle, he shall seek liberty.
The yoke and whip bow down the hard neck: so tame thine evil servant with the whips and correction.
Send him to labor, that he go not idle: for idleness brings much evil.
Set him to work, for that belongs unto him: if he be not obedient, put on more heavy fetters.
But be not excessive toward any, and without discretion do nothing.
If thou have a faithful servant, let him be unto thee as thine own soul: for in blood hast thou gotten him. If thou have a servant, treat him as thy brother: for thou hast need of him, as of thyself. If thou treat him evil, and he run away, wilt thou seek him?
Ecclesiasticus 34
Of dreams. 13 The praise of them that fear God. 18 The offering of the wicked. 22 The bread of the needy. 17 God does not allow the works of an unfaithful man.
THE hope of a foolish man is vain and false, and dreams make fools to have wings.
Whoso regards dreams, is like him that will take hold of a shadow, and follow after the wind.
Even so is it with the appearing of dreams, as the likeness of a face is before another face.
Who can be cleansed by the unclean? or what truth can be spoken of a liar?
Soothsaying, witchcraft, and dreaming is but vanity, and a mind that is occupied with fantasies, is as a woman that travails.
Where as such visions come out of the most High to try thee, set not thine heart upon them.
For dreams have deceived many, and they have failed that put their trust therein.
The Law shall be fulfilled without lies, and wisdom is sufficient to a faithful mouth: [what knowledge hath he that is not tried?]
A man is instructed, understand much, and he that hath good experience, can take of wisdom.
He that hath no experience, knows little, and he that errs, is full of craft.
When I wandered to and fro, I saw many things, and mine understanding is greater than I can express.
I was oft times in danger of death, yet I was delivered by these things.
The spirit of those that fear the Lord, shall live: for their hope is in him that can help them.
Whoso fears the Lord, fears no man, neither is afraid: for he is his hope.
Blessed is the soul of him that fears the Lord: in whom puts he his trust? who is his strength?
For the eyes of the Lord have respect unto them, that love him: he is their mighty protection, and strong ground, a defense from the heat, and a shadow for the noon day, a succor from stumbling, and an help from falling.
He sets up the soul, and enlightens the eyes: he gives health, life and blessing.
He that gives an offering of unrighteous goods, offers a mocking sacrifice, and the gifts of the unrighteous, please him not.
[But the Lord is theirs only, that patiently abide him in the way of truth and righteousness.]
The most High does not allow the offerings of the wicked, neither is he pacified for sin by the multitude of sacrifice.
Whoso brings an offering of the goods of the poor, does as one that sacrifices the son before the father’s eyes.
The bread of the needful is the life of the poor: he that defrauds him thereof, is a murderer.
He that takes away his neighbors living, slays him, and he that defrauds the laborers of his hire, is a blood shedder.
When one prays and another curses, whose voice will the Lord hear?
He that washes himself because of a dead body, and touches it again, what avails his washing?
So it is with a man that fasts for his sins, and commits them again: who will hear his prayer? or what does his fasting help him?
