ECCLESIASTICUS 13 & 14

Ecclesiasticus 13

1 The companies of the proud and of the rich are to be eschewed. 15 The love of God. 17 Like do company with their like.

HE that touches pitch, shall be defiled with it: and he that is familiar with the proud, shall be like unto him.

Burden not thyself above thy power, whiles thou live, and company not with one that is mightier, and richer than thyself: for how agree the kettle and the earthen pot together? for if the one be smitten against the other, it shall be broken.

The rich deals unrighteously, and threatens with all: but the poor being oppressed must entreat: if the rich have done wrong, he must yet be entreated: but if the poor have done it, he shall straight ways be threatened.

If thou be for his profit, he uses thee: but if you have nothing, he will forsake thee.

If thou have anything, he will live with thee: yea, he will make thee a bare man, and will not care for it.

If he have need of thee, he will defraud thee, and will laugh at thee, and put thee in hope, and give thee all good words, and say, What want thou?

Thus will he shame thee in his meat, until he have supt thee clean up twice or thrice, and at the last he will laugh thee to scorn: afterward, when he sees thee, he will forsake thee, and shake his head at thee.

[Submit thyself unto God, and wait upon his hand.]

Beware that you be not deceived in thine own conceit and brought down by thy simpleness: [be not too humble in thy wisdom.]

If thou be called of a mighty man, absent thyself: so shall he call thee the more oft.

Prease [press]* not unto him, that thou be not shut out, but go not thou far off, lest he forget thee.

Withdraw not thyself from his speech, but believe not his many words: for with much communication will he tempt thee, and laughing will he grope thee.

He is unmerciful, and keeps not promises: he will not spare to do thee hurt, and to put thee in prison.

Beware, and take good heed: for thou walk in peril of thine overthrowing: when thou hear this, awake in thy sleep.

Love the Lord all thy life, and call upon him for thy salvation.

Every beast loves his like, and every man loves his neighbor.

All flesh will restore to their like, and every man will keep company with such as he is himself.

How can the wolf agree with the lamb? no more can the ungodly with the righteous.

What fellowship hath a hyena with a dog? and what peace is between the rich and the poor?

As the wild ass is the lion’s prey in the wilderness, so are poor men the meat of the rich.

As the proud hate humility, so do the rich abhor the poor.

If a rich man fall, his friends set him up again: but when the poor falls, his friends drive him away.

If a rich man offend, he hath many helpers: he speaks proud words, and yet men justify him: but if a poor man fail, they rebuke him, and though he speak wisely, yet can it have no place.

When the rich man speaks, every man holds his tongue: and look what he saith, they praise it unto the clouds: but if the poor man speak, they say, What fellow is this? and if he do amiss, they will destroy him.

Riches are good unto him that hath no sin [in his conscience,] and poverty is evil in the mouth of the ungodly.

The heart of man changes his countenance, whether it be good or evil.

A cheerful countenance is a token of a good heart: for it is an hard thing to know the secrets of the thought.

Ecclesiasticus 14

1 The offense of the tongue. 17 Man is but a vain thing. 21 Happy is he that continues in wisdom.

BLESSED is the man that hath not fallen by [the word of] his mouth, and is not tormented with the sorrow of sin.

Blessed is he that is not condemned in his conscience, and is not fallen from his hope in the Lord.

Riches are comely for a nigarde [stingy, miser]*, and what should an envious man do with money?

He that gathers together from his own soul, heaps together for others, that will make good cheer with his goods.

He that is wicked unto himself, to whom will he be good? for such one can have no pleasure of his goods.

There is nothing worse, than when one envies himself: and this is a reward of his wickedness.

And if he do any good, he does it, not knowing thereof, and against his will, and at the last he declares his wickedness.

The envious man has a wicked look: he turns away his face, and despises men.

A covetous man’s eye hath never enough of a portion, and his wicked malice withers his own soul.

A wicked eye envies the bread, and there is scarceness upon his table.

My son, do good to thyself of that thou hast, and give the Lord his due offerings.

Remember that death tarries not, and that the covenant of the grave is not showed unto thee.

Do good unto thy friend before thou die, and according to thine ability stretch out thine hand, and give him.

Defraud not thyself of the good day, and let not the portion of the good desires overpass thee.

Shalt thou not leave thy travails unto another, and thy labors for the dividing of the heritage?

Give and take and sanctify thy soul: [work thou righteousness before thy death:] for in the hell there is no meat to find..

All flesh waxes old, as a garment, and this is the condition of all times, Thou shalt die the death.

As the green leaves on a thick tree, some fall, and some grow, so is the generation of flesh and blood: one comes to an end, and another is born.

All corruptible things shall fail, and the worker thereof shall go withal.

[Every excellent work shall be justified, and he that works it, shall have honor thereby.]

Blessed is the man that does meditate honest things by wisdom, [and exercises himself in justice,] and he that reasons of holy things by his understanding.

Which considers in his heart her ways, and understands her secrets.

Go thou after her as one that seeks her out, and lie in wait for her ways.

He shall look in at her windows, and hearken at her doors.

He shall abide beside her house, and fastens a stake in her walls: he shall pitch his tent beside her.

And he shall remain in the lodging of good men, and shall set his children under her covering, and shall dwell under her branches.

By her he shall be covered from the heat, and in her glory shall he dwell.
