ECCLESIASTICUS 5 & 6

Ecclesiasticus 5

1 In riches may we not put any confidence. 7 The vengeance of God ought to be feared, and repentance may not be differed.

TRUST not unto thy riches, and say not, I have enough for my life: [for it shall not help in the time of vengeance and indignation.]

Follow not thine own mind and thy strength to walk in the ways of thine heart:

Neither say you, [How have I had strength?] or who will bring me under for my works? for God the avenger will revenge the wrong done by thee.

And say not, I have sinned, and when evil hath come unto me? for the Almighty is a patient rewarder, but he will not leave thee unpunished.

Because thy sin is forgiven, be not without fear, to heap sin upon sin.

And say not, The mercies of God is great: he will forgive my manifold sins: for mercy, and wrath come from him, and his indignation comes down upon sinners.

Make no tarrying to turn unto the Lord, and put not off from day to day: for suddenly shall the wrath of the Lord break forth, and in thy security thou shalt be destroyed, and thou shalt perish in time of vengeance.

Trust not in wicked riches: for they shall not help thee in the day of punishment [and vengeance.]

Be not carried about with every wind, and go not into every way: for so does the sinner that has a double tongue.

Stand fast in thy sure understanding [and in the way and knowledge of the Lord] and have but one manner of word, [and follow the word of peace and righteousness.

Be humble to hear the word of God, that thou may understand it, and make a true answer with wisdom.]

Be swift to hear good things, and let thy life be pure, and give a patient answer.

If thou hast understanding, answer thy neighbor: if not, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, [lest thou be trapped in an indiscreet word, and so be blamed.]

Honor and shame is in the talk, and the tongue of a man causes him to fall.

Be not counted a talebearer, and lie not in wait with thy tongue: for shame [and repentance] follow the thief, and an evil condemnation is over him that is double tongued: [but he that is a backbiter, shall be hated, envied and confounded.]

Do not rashly, neither in small things nor in great.

Ecclesiasticus 6

1 It is not the property of a sinner to be evil tongued. 6 Of friendship. 33 Desire to be taught.

BE not of a friend [thy neighbors] enemy: for such shall have an evil name, shame and reproach, and he shall be in infimy as the wicked that hath a double tongue.

Be not proud in the device of thine own mind, lest thy soul rent thee as a bull,

And eat up thy leaves, and destroy thy fruit, and so thou be left as a dry tree [in the wilderness.]

For a wicked soul destroys him that has it, and makes him to be laughed to scorn of his enemies, [and bring him to the portion of the ungodly.]

A sweet talk multiplies the friends [and pacifies them that be at variance,] and a sweet tongue increases much good talk.

Hold friendship with many, nevertheless have but one counselor of a thousand.

If thou get a friend, prove him first, and be not hasty to credit him.

For some man is a friend for his own occasion, and will not abide in the day of thy trouble.

And there is some friend that turns to enmity, and takes part against thee, and in contention he will declare thy shame.

Again some friend is but a companion at the table, and in the day of thine affliction he continues not.

But in thy prosperity he will be as thou thyself, and will use liberty over thy servants.

If thou be brought low, he will be against thee, and will hide himself from thy face.

Depart from thine enemies, and beware of thy friends.

A faithful friend is a strong defense, and he that finds such one, finds treasure.

A faithful friend ought not to be changed for any thing, and the weight [of gold and silver] is not to be compared to the goodness [of his faith.]

A faithful friend is the medicine of life [and immortality,] and they that fear the Lord, shall find him.

Whoso fears the Lord, shall direct his friendship a right, and as his own self, so shall his friends be.

My son, receive doctrine from thy youth up: so shalt thou find wisdom [which shall endure] til thine old age.

Go to her as one that plows, and sows, and wait for her good fruits: for thou shalt have but little labor in her work: but you shalt eat of her fruits right soon.

How exceeding sharp is she to the unlearned? he that is without judgment, will not remain with her.

Unto such one she is as a fine touchstone, and he casts her from him without delay.

For they have the name of wisdom, but there be but few that have the knowledge of her.

[For with then that know her, she abides unto the appearing of God.]

Give ear, my son: receive my doctrine, and refuse not my counsel,

And put thy feet into her links, and thy neck into her chain.

Bow down thy shoulder unto her, and bear her, and be not weary of her bands.

Come unto her with thy whole heart, and keep her ways with all thy power.

Seek after her, and search her, and she shall be showed thee: and when thou hast gotten her, forsake her not.

For at the last thou shalt find rest in her, and that shall be turned to thy joy.

Then shall her fetters be a strong defense for thee, [and a sure foundation] and her chains a glorious raiment.

For there is a golden ornament in her, and her bands are the laces of purple color.

Thou shalt put her on as a robe of honor, and shalt put her upon thee, as a crown of joy.

My son, if thou wilt, thou shalt be taught, and if thou delight in hearing, thou shalt be wise.

Stand with the multitude of the Elders, which are wise, and join with him that is wise.

Desire to hear all godly talk, and let not the grave sentence of knowledge escape thee.

And if thou see a man of understanding, get thee soon unto him, and let thy foot wear the steps of his doors

Let thy mind be upon the ordinances of the Lord, and be continually occupied in his commandments: so shall he establish thine heart, and give thee wisdom at thine own desire.
