Ecclesiasticus 3
2 To our father and mother ought we to give double honor. 10 Of the blessing and curse of the father and mother. 23 No man ought over curiosity to search out the secrets of God.
THE [children of wisdom are the Church of righteous, and their offspring is obedient and love.]
Hear your father’s judgment, o children, and do thereafter, that ye may be safe.
For the Lord will have the father honored of the children, and hath confirmed the authority of the mother over the children.
Whoso honors his father, his sins shall be forgiven him, [and he shall abstain from them, and shall have his daily desires.]
And he that honors his mother, is like one that gathers treasure.
Whoso honors his father, shall have joy of his own children, and when he makes his prayer, he shall be heard.
He that honors his father, shall have a long life, and he that is obedient unto the Lord, shall comfort his mother.
He that fears the Lord, honors his parents, and does service unto his parents, as unto lords.
Honor thy father and mother in deed and in word [and in all patience,] that thou may have God’s blessing, [and that his blessing may abide with thee in the end.]
For the blessing of the father establishes the houses of the children, and the mothers curse rots the foundations.
Rejoice not at the dishonor of thy father: for it is not honor unto thee, but shame.
Seeing that man’s glory comes by his father’s honor, and the reproach of the mother is dishonor to the children,
My son, help thy father in his age, and grieve him not as long as he lives.
And if his understanding fail, have patience with him, and despise him not when thou art in thy full strength.
For the good increase of thy father shall not be forgotten, but it shall be a fortress for thee against sins, [and for thy mother’s offense thou shalt be recompensed with good, and it shall be founded for thee in righteousness.]
And in the day of trouble thou shalt be remembered: thy sins also shall melt away as the ice in the fair weather.
He that forsakes his father, shall come to shame, and he that angers his mother, is cursed of God.
My son, perform thy doings with meekness, so shalt thou be beloved of them that are approved.
The greater thou art, the more humble thyself [in all things,] and thou shalt find favor before the Lord.
Many are excellent and of renown: but the secrets are revealed unto the meek.
For the power of the Lord is great, and he is honored of the lowly.
Seek not out the things that are to hard for thee, neither search the things rashly which are too mighty for thee.
[But] what [God] hath commanded thee, think upon that with reverence, [and be not curious in many of his works:] for it is not needful for thee to see with thine eyes the things that are secret.
Be not curious in superfluous things: for many things are shown unto thee above the captivity of men.
The meddling with such hath beguiled many, and an evil opinion hath deceived their judgment.
Thou can not see without eyes: profess not the knowledge therefore that thou hast not.
A stubborn heart shall fare evil at the last: and he that loves danger, shall perish therein.
An heart that goes two ways, shall not prosper: and he that is froward of heart, shall stumble therein.
An obstinant heart shall be laden with sorrows: and the wicked man shall heap sin upon sin.
The persuasion of the proud is without remedy, and his steps shall be plucked up: for the plant of sin hath taken root in him, [and he shall not be esteemed.]
The heart of him that hath understanding, shall perceive secret things, and an attentive ear is the desire of a wise man.
[An heart that is wise and understanding, will abstain from sin, and shall prosper in the works of righteousness.]
Water quenches burning fire, and alms take away sins.
And he that rewards good deeds, will remember it afterward, and in the time of the fall, he shall find a stay.
Ecclesiasticus 4
2 Alms must be done with gentleness. 12 The study of wisdom and her fruit. 20 An exhortation to eschew evil, and to do good.
MY son, defraud not the poor of his living, and make not the needy eyes to wait long.
Make not an hungry soul sorrowful, neither vex a man in his necessity.
Trouble not the heart that is grieved, and defer not the gift of the needy.
Refuse not the prayer of one that is in trouble: turn not away thy face from the poor.
Turn not thine eyes aside [in anger] from the poor, and give him none occasion to speak evil of thee.
For if he curse thee in the bitterness of his soul, his prayers shall be heard of him that made him.
Be courteous unto the company [of poor, and humble thy soul unto the Elder,] and bow down thine head to a man of worship.
Let it not grieve thee to bow down thine ear unto the poor, [but pay thy debt,] and give him a friendly answer.
Deliver him that suffers wrong, from the hand of the oppressor, and be not faint hearted when thou judges.
Be as a father unto the fatherless, and as an husband unto their mother: so shalt thou be as a son of the most High and he shall love thee more than thy mother does.
Wisdom exalts her children, and receives them that seek her, [and will go before them in the way of righteousness.]
He that loveth her, loveth life, and they that seek life in the morning, shall have great joy.
He that keeps her, shall inherit glory: for unto whom she enters, him the Lord will bless.
They that honor her, shall be the servants of the holy one, and them that love her, the Lord doth love.
Whoso gives ear unto her, shall judge the nations, and he that goes unto her, shall dwell safely.
He that is faithful unto her, shall have her in possession, and his generation shall possess her.
For first she will walk with him by crooked ways, and bring him unto fear, and dread, and torment him with her discipline until she has tried his soul, and have proved him by her judgments.
Then will she return the straight way unto him, and comfort him, and show him her secrets, [and heap upon him the treasures of knowledge, and understanding of righteousness.]
But if he go wrong, she will forsake him, and give him over into the hands of his destruction.
[My son,] Make much of time, and eschew the thing that is evil,
And be not ashamed [to say the truth] for thy life: for there is a shame that brings sin, and a shame that brings worship and favor.
Accept no person against thine own conscience, that thou be not confounded to thine own decay, [and forbear not thy neighbor in his fault.]
And keep not back counsel when it may do good, neither hide thy wisdom when it may be famous.
For by the talk is wisdom known, and learning by the words of the tongue, [and counsel, wisdom and learning by the talking of the wise, and steadfastness in the works of righteousness.]
In no wise speak against the word of truth, but be ashamed of the lies of thine own ignorance.
Be not ashamed to confess thy sins, and resist not the course of the river.
Submit not thyself unto a foolish man, neither accept the person of the mighty.
Strive for the truth unto death, [and defend justice for thy life,] and the Lord God shall fight for thee [against thine enemies.]
Be not hasty in thy tongue, neither slack and negligent in thy works.
Be not as a lion in thine own house, neither beat thy servants for thy fantasy, [nor oppress them that are under thee.]
Let not thine hand be stretched out to receive, and shut when thou should give.
