THE WISDOM OF SALOMON 5 & 6

Salomon 5

2 The constantness of the righteous before their persecutors. 14 The hope of the unfaithful is vain. 15 The blessedness of the saints and godly.

THEN shall the righteous stand in great boldness before the face of such as have tormented him, and taken away his labors.

When they see him, they shall be vexed with horrible fear, and shall be amazed for his wonderful deliverance,

And shall change their minds, and sigh for grief of mind, and say within themselves, This is he whom we sometime had in derision, and in a parable of reproach.

We fools thought his life madness, and his end without honor.

How is he counted among the children of God, and his portion is among the Saints!

Therefore we have erred from the way of truth, and the light of righteousness hath not shined upon us, and the sun of understanding rose not upon us.

We have wearied ourselves in the way of wickedness and destruction, and we have gone through dangerous ways: but we have not known the way of the Lord.

What hath pride profited us? or what profit hath the pomp of riches brought us?

All those things are passed away like a shadow, and as a post that passes by:

As a ship that passes over the waves of the water, which when it is gone by, the trace thereof can not be found, neither the path of it in the floods:

Or as a bird that flees through in the air, and no man can see any token of her passage, but only hear the noise of her wings, beating the light wind, parting the air through the vehemency of her going, and flees on shaking her wings, where as afterward no token of her way can be found:

Or as when an arrow is shot at a mark, it parts the air, which immediately comes together again, so that a man cannot know where it went through.

Even so we, as soon as we were born, we began to draw to our end, and have showed no token of virtue, but are consumed in our own wickedness.

For the hope of the ungodly is like the dust that is blown away with the wind, and like a thin form that is scattered abroad with the storm, and as the smoke, which is dispersed with the wind, and as the remembrance of him passes, that tarries but for a day.

But the righteous shall live for ever: their reward also is with the Lord, and the most High hath care of them.

Therefore shall they receive a glorious kingdom, and a beautiful crown of the Lord’s hand: for with his right hand shall he cover them, and with his arm shall he defend them.

He shall take his jealousy for armor, and shall arm the creatures to be revenged of the enemies.

He shall put on righteousness for a breastplate, and take true judgement in stead of an helmet.

He will take holiness for an invincible shield.

He will sharpen his fierce wrath for a sword, and the world shall fight with him against the unwise.

Then shall the thunder bolts go straight out of the lightnings, and shall flee to the mark as out of the bent bow of the clouds, and out of his anger that throws stones, shall thick hail be cast; and the water of the sea shall be wroth against them, and the floods shall mightily overflow.

And a nighty wind shall stand up against them, and like a storm shall scatter them abroad. Thus iniquity shall bring all the earth to a wilderness, and wickedness shall overthrow the thrones of the mighty.

Salomon 6

The calling of Kings, princes and judges, which are also exhorted to search wisdom.

HEAR therefore, o ye Kings, and understand: learn, ye that be judges of the end of the earth.

Give ear, ye that rule the multitudes and glory in the multitude of people.

For the rule is given you of the Lord, and power by the most High, which will try your works, and search out your imaginations.

Because that ye being officers of his kingdom have not judged aright, nor kept the Law, nor walked after the will of God,

Horribly and suddenly will he appear unto you: for an hard judgement shall they have that bear rule.

For he that is most low, is worthy mercy, but the mighty shall be mightily tormented.

For he that is Lord over all, will spare no person, neither shall he fear any greatness: for he hath made the small and great, and cares for all alike,

But for the mighty abides the sorer trial.

Unto you therefore, o tyrants, do I speak, that ye may learn wisdom, and not go amiss.

For they that keep holiness holily [pious, devout, sacred]*, shall be holy, and they that are learned there, shall find a defense.

Wherefore set your delight upon my words and desire them, and ye shall be instructed.

Wisdom shines and never fades away, and is safely seen of them that love her, and found of such as seek her,

She prevented them that desire her, that she may first show herself unto them.

Whoso awakes unto her betimes, shall have no great travail: for he shall find her sitting at his doors.

To think upon her then is perfect in understanding: and who so watches for her, shall be soon without care.

For she goes about, seeking such as are meet for her, and shows herself cheerfully unto them in the ways, and meets them in every thought.

For the most true desire of discipline is her beginning: and the care of discipline is love:

And love is keeping of her laws: and the keeping of the laws is the assurance of immortality:

And immortality makes us near unto God.

Therefore the desire of wisdom leads to the kingdom.

If your delight be then in thrones, and scepters, o Kings of the people, honor wisdom, that ye may reign for ever.

Now I will tell you what wisdom is, and whence it comes, and will not hide the mysteries from you, but will seek her out from the beginning of her nativity, and bring the knowledge of her into light, and will not keep back the truth.

Neither will I have to do with consuming envy: for such a man shall not be partaker of wisdom.

But the multitude of the wise is the preservation of the world, and a wise King is the stay of the people.

Be therefore instructed by my words, and ye shall have profit.
