2 Esdras 11
The vision of an eagle coming forth of the sea, and of her feathers. 37 Of a lion coming out of the forest.
THEN saw I a dream, and behold, there came up from the sea an eagle, which had twelve feathered wings, and three heads.
And I saw and behold, she spread her wings over all the earth, and all the winds of the air blew on her, and gathered themselves.
And I beheld, and out of her feathers grew out other contrary feathers, and they became little feathers and small.
But her heads remained still, and the head in the midst was greater than the other heads, yet rested it with them.
Moreover, I saw that the eagle flew with his feathers and reigned upon earth and over them that dwelt therein.
And I saw that all things under the heaven were subject unto her, and no man spake against her, no not one creature upon earth.
I saw also that the eagle stood up upon her claws, and spoke to her feathers, saying,
Watch not all together: sleep every one in his own place, and watch by course.
But let the heads be preserved for the last.
Nevertheless, I saw that the voice went not out of her heads, but from the midst of her body.
Then I numbered her contrary feathers, and behold, there were eight of them.
And I looked, and behold upon the right side there arose one feather, and reigned over all the earth.
And when it had reigned, the end of it came, and the place thereof appeared no more. So the next stood up, and reigned: it continued a long time.
And when it had reigned, the end of it came, and the place thereof appeared no more. So the next stood up, and reigned: it continued a long time.
And when it had reigned, the end of it came also, and as the first, so it appeared no more.
Then there came a voice unto it, and said,
Hear thou that hast kept the earth so long: this I say unto thee, before thou begin to appear no more,
There shall none after thee attain unto thy time, neither to the half thereof.
Then arose the third and reigned as the other afore, and it appeared the half thereof.
So came it to all the others one after another, so that every one reigned and then appeared no more.
Then I looked, and behold in process of time the feathers that followed, stood up on the right side, that they might rule also, and some of them rules, but within a while they appeared no more.
For some of them were set up, but ruled not,
After this I looked and behold, the twelve feathers appeared no more, nor the two wings.
And there was no more upon the eagle’s body, but two heads that rested and six wings.
Then saw I also that two wings divided themselves from the six, and remained under the head, that was upon the right side: for the four continued in their place.
So I looked, and behold, the underwings thought to set up themselves, and to have the rule.
Then was there one set up, but shortly it appeared no more.
And the second were sooner gone than the first.
Then I beheld, and lo, the two that remained, thought also in themselves to reign.
And when they so thought, behold, there awakened one of the heads that were at rest, which was in the midst: for that was greater than the two.
And then I saw, that the two heads were joined therewith.
And behold, the head was turned with them, that were with it, and did eat up the two underwings that would have reigned.
But this head put the whole earth in fear and bare rule in it, over all those that dwelt upon earth with much labor, and it had the governance of the world, more than all the wings that had been.
After this I looked, and behold, the head that was in the midst, suddenly appeared no more, as did the wings.
But the two heads remained, which also ruled likewise upon earth, and over those that dwelt therein.
And I beheld, and lo the head upon the right side devoured that was upon the left side.
Then I heard a voice which said unto me, Look before thee, and consider the thing that thou see.
So I saw, and behold as it were a lion that roars, running hastily out of the wood: and I saw that he sent out a man’s voice unto the eagle, and spake, and said,
Here are thou, I will talk with thee, and the most High shall say unto thee,
Art not thou that that of the four beasts remained, whom I made to reign in my world, that by them the end of times might come,
And the fourth is come, and has overcome all the beasts that were past, and have power over the world with great fearfulness, and over the whole compass of the earth with most wicked oppression, and that dwells so long time in all the world with deceit?
For you have not judged the earth with truth.
Seein thou hast troubled the meek, thou have hurt the peaceable, and thou have loved liars, and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit, and have cast down the walls of such as did thee no harm,
Therefore it is thy wrongful dealing come up unto the most High, and thy pride unto the Mighty.
The most High also hath looked upon the proud times, and behold, they are ended, and their abominations are fulfilled.
Therefore appear no more, thou eagle, nor thine horrible wings, not thy wicked feathers, not thy malicious heads, and thy wicked claws, not all thy vain body,
That all the earth may be refreshed, and come again, as one delivered from thy violence, and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her.
2 Esdras 12
The declaration of the former visions.
AND when the lion spoke these words to the eagle, I saw,
And behold, the head that had the upper hand, appeared no more, neither did the four wings appear any more, that come to it, and set up themselves to reign, whose kingdom was small and full of uproars.
And I saw, and behold, they appeared no more, and the whole body of the eagle was burnt, so that the earth was in great fear. Then I awoke out of the trouble and trance of my mind, and from the great fear, and said unto my spirit,
Lo, this have thou done unto me in that thou searches out the ways of the most High.
Lo, yet am I weary in my mind, and very weak in my spirit, and little strength is there in me, for the great fear that I received this night.
Therefore now I will beseech the most High that he will comfort me unto the end.
And I said, O Lord, Lord, if I have found grace before thy sight, and if I am justified with thee before many other, and if my prayer indeed become up before thy face,
Comfort me, and show me thy servant the interpretation and difference of this horrible sight, that thou may perfectly comfort my soul,
Seeing thou has judged me worthy to show me the last times.
Then he said unto me, This is the interpretation of this vision,
The eagle, whom thou saw come up from the sea, is the kingdom which was seen in the vision of thy brother Daniel.
But it was not expounded unto him: therefore now I declare it unto thee.
Behold, the days come, that there shall rise up a kingdom upon the earth, and it shall be feared above all kingdoms that were before it.
In it shall twelve Kings reign one after another,
Whereof the second shall begin to reign and shall have more time than the twelve.
And this do the twelve wings signify, which thou saw.
As for the voice that thou heard speak, and that thou saw not go out from the heads, but from the midst of the body thereof, this is the interpretation,
That after the time of that kingdom there shall arise great strife, and it shall be in danger to fall, but it shall not then fall, but shall be restored again to his beginning.
Concerning the eight underwings, which thou sawest hang unto her wings, this is the interpretation,
In him shall arise eight Kings, whose time shall be but small, and their years swift, and two of them shall perish.
But when the mid time comes, there shall be four kept a time, whiles his time begins to come, that it may be ended, but two shall be kept unto the end.
And where as thou saw three heads resting, this is the interpretation,
In his last days shall the most High raise up three kingdoms, and shall call again many things into them, and they shall have the dominion of the earth,
And of those that dwell therein, with much grief above all those that were before them: therefore are they called the heads of the eagle.
For they shall accomplish his wickedness, and shall finish his last end.
And where as thou saw that the great head appeared no more, it signifies that one of them shall die upon his bed, and yet with pain.
For the two that remain, the sword shall devour them.
For the sword of the one shall devour the other: but at the last, shall he fall by the sword himself.
And where as you saw two underwings, that went off toward the head, which was on the right side, this is the interpretation,
These are they whom the most High has preserved for their end, whose kingdom is little, and full of trouble as thou saw.
And the lion whom thou saw rising up out of the wood and roaring, and speaking unto the eagle, and rebuking her for her unrighteousness with all the words that thou hast heard,
This is the wind which the most High has kept for them, and for their wickedness unto the end, and he shall reprove them, and cast before them their spoils.
For he shall set them alive in the judgement, and shall rebuke them and correct them.
For he will deliver the residue of my people by affliction, which are preserved upon my borders, and he shall make them joyful, until the coming of the day of judgment, whereof I have spoken unto thee from the beginning.
This is the dream that thou saw, and these are the interpretations.
Thou only have been meet to know this secret of the most High.
Therefore write all these things that thou have seen, in a book and hide them,
And teach them the wise of the people, whose hearts thou know may comprehend and keep these secrets.
But wait thou here yet seven days more, that it may be showed thee whatsoever it pleases the most High to declare unto thee: and with that he went his way.
And when all the people perceived, that the seven days were past, and I not come again into the city, they gathered them all together, from the least unto the most, and came unto me, and spake unto me, saying,
What have we offended thee? or what evil have we done against thee, that thou forsake us, and sit in this place?
For of all the people thou only art left us as a grape of the vine, and as a candle in a dark place, and as an haven or ship preserved from the tempest.
Are not the evils which are come unto us, sufficient?
If thou then forsake us, how much better had it been for us, that we had been burnt also as Sion was burnt?
For we are not better than they that died there: and they wept with a loud voice. Then answered I them, and said,
Be of good comfort, o Israel, and be not heavy, thou house of Iacob.
For the most High hath you in remembrance, and the Almighty hath not forgotten you in temptation.
As for me I have not forsaken you, neither am I departed from you, but am come into this place to pray for the desolation of Sion, that I might seek mercy for the low estate of your Sanctuary.
And now go your way home every man, and after these days will I come unto you.
So the people went their way into the city, as I commanded them:
But I remained still in the field seven days, as he had commanded me, and did eat only of the flowers of the field, and had my meat of the herbs in those days.
